Thanks, John.  I'll take another look at it this week.  I may just replace the gear oil for now and see how bad it leaks with the water contamination.  I'm only losing about an ounce or less a day at this point.

For NOS brake bands try  http://www.weberstractorworks.com/  They are a 
father and son that buy out dealer inventories, closed warehouses, etc.  
If they have them the price will be good, and it will be new IH parts.

The right axle goes into the bull gear in the transmission.  to remove 
it you have to take out the cap screw and washer hat goes into the end 
of the axle in the tranny.  This can be done through the pto hole with a 
little work.  when you reinstall it though the bull gear has to be 
supported as the axle slides in.  It has been a long time, but you may 
be able to pull the housing and leave axle on tractor, by using a piece 
of emery cloth to smooth shaft so it doesn't mess up the seal.  Someone 
else will remember if that will work.  You can still get gaskets from 
your local dealer, or on line form www.cngco.com.    You can also buy 
gasket material form your local auto parts store and make your own 
fairly easily
