[AJD] Brought the 'new' A home today

Today I mounted my new winch on the trailer and was off to go pick up the A with the Schwartz wide front end on it.

It pulled up onto the trailer fairly easily (I didn't bring a fully charged battery for the winch so there was a slight struggle). Tied it down and off for home we went.

I called a buddy to come and help out with the unloading process. We decided to play with it a bit on the trailer first.. So I drained all the water from the oil.. (had about a quart in it) Emptied out the cooling system (A few pints of water there) We set up a system to apply a little force to the flywheel, and as it turns out it was not stuck. The clutch is was stuck. It is presently stuck engaged, but at least it is turning now.

So we put a little Kroil in each cylinder, cleaned the points, made sure the vavles were not stuck, and put a battery to the starter. It turned over, and had spark.

The gas tank is missing, but someone installed a 1/2 gallon briggs and stratton tank under the hood. We filled this with gas and flushed out the carb.. The carb is pretty crusty looking, the load needle is stuck, but we gave it a try.. Only a small pop.. The battery was pretty weak so we called in the don't try this at home team and went to pull starting the tractor.

We fired up the 1947 G and drug the a off the trailer and turned it around. The power steering works if you pull it with the engine turning... sort of.. So down the road we went.. With the clutch stuck engaged it was a little hairy.. but when it started I pulled it out of gear. Oh, did I mention neither of the brakes work either??

So it started and ran for a few seconds.. It is running really rich, (Oh yeah, the throttle lever is stuck too) So tomorrow if I am not hauling red potatoes I am heading back to the tractor with a rebuilt dltx-71 off my shelf, new spark plugs and we'll see if it will run better with the correct fuel air mixture...

I never expected this A to even come close to running.. It may have just saved it's own life.. If I can get the clutch to work and throttle freed up tomorrow things should be looking up for this tractor.

If you want another peek at it here's the link.. I'll try and take a few more pictures tomorrow.
