If they turn backwards they will magnetize your muffler bearings and
cause lightning to burn out your points.

Or maybe they turn the other way in the southern hemisphere.....

 I suppose there are lots of reasons, here's another.
If the shreaders have dual blades do they turn in the same direction? Or 
opposite directions? Either way the shredded material is going to be moved 
toward the direction of blade rotation. Do they leave piles or is it mixed 
up and just ugly looking? Does direction of cut have anything to do with it?
