Larry
As the old saying goes, "don't criticize volunteer help". <grins>
You mention tradeoffs; I would give a lot if we could grow kentucky
bluegrass in this area.
Yes, Barbara and I both enjoy Master Gardeners; in fact, she is at some
flower whatever in Athens, GA today. And tomorrow our MG club has a
private tour of the propagation facilities of a nursery that contracted
design and planting of 800 containers for the 1996 olympics.
See you at Portland August show.

grass has trouble getting out and ends up getting pulverized. Some brands
of tractors haven't figured out that there is a difference in whether the
blades rotate "toward" each other instead of "away". John Deere runs
theirs the wrong way. Regardless of the rotation, the extra time the
clippings are inside the shroud of the deck takes extra horsepower to run
the unit. The whole purpose is to turn the clippings into mulch before
being discharged. The counter-rotating spindles typically require a
double-sided cog belt to keep them synchronized.

your comments seriously, but mowing grass is serious business around our
house. My wife is now an Advanced Master Gardner. She has taken over the
process of lawn mowing, and she makes sure that the mower is working
exactly like its suipposed to :-( It was a lot simpler around here when I
did the lawn mowing and I could go for the whole season without
resharpening the blades. Ah well. There are trade offs.
