[AJD] Running temperature

Bill: I have several 420s, and have never had one run that cool. They
run right at 160-170, or a little higher under load for a prolonged
period. What I have run into is some new temperature gauges that are
not accurate. I have had a couple that never read correctly, and had to
change the gauge again and it read more in line with the traditional
performance of the tractor. These are no known for running too cool, at
least not in my experience. Thermostats could have the same issues as
the gauge, although I have not had that issue with any of the 420s, but
have had struggles with automotive thermostats.

HI CEE VILL,

Thanks for your information. I do appreciate your effort. I still have
the
old thermostat and although it seemed to produce the same running temp,
I
will check it on the stove to see when it opens.

Regards, Bill

The only time that would seem like a problem to me, Bill, is if I wanted

heat from a heater core in winter, or if I was going to run kerosene.
It
seems your cooling system is doing a good job. If you work it hard on a
90
degree day and it runs 20 degrees warmer, you are still in good shape.
I
suspect the new thermostat starts to open lower than it is marked. I
have
had to try three of them in years past to get one that would give me
good
heat in winter on some trucks and cars. I have cooked them on the stove

with a candy thermometer in the water to see where they really open.
