we had troubles with  those holley carbs  too.      we've got about 3 of them 
 laying around  here.
we found  that  what worked really the best was  a   750- single pump double 
feed.   The   650 double feed double  pump  was constantly flooding on start 
up and  was out of power   at the top end.
 
the  427 we have  now is a mess  (as is the   truck --long story )  but  we 
have   a     "BELIEVE IT OR NOT" a  Quadra-Jet off an  old  350 LOL it   runs 
out of power from lack of fuel  but  it does run   a  WHOLE lot better than it 
did with the old   Holleys   :)    
 
MY  cousin  who   ran  corvette's   says   the   Holley's are  good if  you   
stay   Intimate with it  ( like you would your wives  guys)      LOL.
