[Farmall] Oil Pressure Gauges

Well, I'm finally finishing up the oil pressure gauge project thing that we talked about on the list 6 or 8 weeks ago. After the good list discussion, I sent two gauges off to a guy in WI who restores them. He took my old original, non working gauge, put a nice, black face with the old style logo (18113-DA), and was able to calibrate it so the gauge would read mid range (or straight up) at 2.5 psi, which should be perfect for my early 10-20 with no oil filter. He was unable to do anything with the reproduction gauge that I sent him. That one came to me with a decent black face with the old style logo (31041-DB) and the vender there in MD says it is supposed to be 0-15psi. Jerry in WI can restore these old, original gauges using glass instead of plastic lenses, putting original black faces in them with the part number/logo, and calibrating the gauge to work properly in your early IH tractor or power unit. If your interested in talking to him about his work,

below is some info on the project that he and I worked on regarding early IH gauges and oil pressures.

Jerry, I received the gauges back in yesterdays mail. Thank you for doing a nice job. The one that you re-did looks real good, and that 18113DA face will work very well. That particular face was used on the Farmall Regular, F-20, F-30, I-20, and I-30, from approximately 1930 thru 1938. The F-12/F-14, W-12/14, O-12/14, used that 31041DB face like the other gauge I sent. The difference being that it has the red color on the left side of the arc. The early Farmall Regulars, and other early IH models used a couple various gauges, but it appears that they were a black face, solid white arc, and a white needle. Some had a black needle. The pressure ranges would vary depending on the tractor model that was involved. And from what I have learned, the breakdown is basically that the early IH tractors with oil pressure gauges from 1921 thru 1929 were in the 1-6 psi range. When the oil filters were introduced in mid year 1929, operating pressures jumped a few psi, lets say 2-8psi. And when the 12 series tractors came out in 1933 (with the IH motor) they had an improved internal oiling system which again jumped the pressures a few psi, I'll guess 4-12psi, or whatever range that 31041DB gauge is calibrated.

  thanks,
  bobcurrie
