[Farmall] broken easy out

First of all, I don't purport to be an expert on this. My statements are
just based on my experiences. I have used the method you describe only
once, and that was on a cattle waterer where the bolt had rusted in and
twisted off. However, in this case it was a little less than 1/2" thick and
I could blow the metal straight through the bottom. It did work nad all I
had to do was run a tap through to clean out the threads. I did this only
because it was too far away from any source for a welder and was fastened
down so it could not be moved. I am thinking this method would only work on
cast iron and not on steel, as the steel would get too hot and the threads
would be destroyed. I would greatly prefer the weld method over the heating
method, although I think I would try the heating/blowing out method before I
would ever try an "easy out". Before trying it on something as important
as one of our old tractors, I think I would try to find some junk casting
that either had a bolt already broken off (or where you could knock the head
off of a bolt) and experiment with that just to get the feel of things
before atacking something good. Hope this helps. Perhaps someone on the
list who has actually done this on a larger casting will chime in here.
