Clark,
You are right.  Applying voltage to the A terminal energizes the field 
coils.  Energizing the field coils magnetizes the pole shoes and frame. 
Getting the proper magnetization of the pole shoes it the whole point of the 
exercise.  Current will flow through the armature during the process, but it 
is largely irrelevant.
