Dick,
About all I know is that some 12 volt conversions meant cutting the
engine cover to fit the newer, bugger alternator in. This is what
happened to my '51 IHC McCormick W-4. It is possible to get foreign
car alternators of smaller size, and maybe make a special bracket to
mount them, where there is only a small amount of room.
On my tractor, the sheet metal was slit and bent out of the way to
make room for the 12 volt alternator. One day I'll want to re-convert
that and get the sheet metal welded and so on.
So look into this aspect before you get a new alternator for your
tractor.
Oh: you may have to replace any headlight lamps, or other lamps, the
separate voltage regulator if it is separate, starter solenoid if
there is one, and maybe the starter. The 6 volt starter may hold up
under 12 volts, but do get advice from folks who know.
I look forward to posts from folks who are not guessing like I am.
