I seem to remember a diagram in the TSC catalog or web site that shows
the rocks/gravel to allow drainage. Since the freeze here, I've taken
the hose off the hydrant and drained the water out of it so it would
not be blocked next time I need to use it.

Or maybe some anti-seize grease intended for spark plugs. The wood
stove here (one of those soapstone jobs from Hearthstone) has a
sliding air control at the back operated by a long rod from the
front. It was very hard to move and the stove store guy's suggestion
to just work it a lot till it frees up did not satisfy me. Just a bit
of the anti-seize compound (about $2.50) at the auto parts store) has
made it run "jes as smooothe as you please!"
