Yesterday I would have liked to have gotten hold of the neck of the
total idiot that decided that Astro vans after 1996 should have a
heavy plastic "acoustical shield" over the heater blower. It only
blocks the noise if you are standing outside of the van. The "book"
says to cut it out at the ribs, so does the shield itself. they might
have well said sprout wings and fly to Mars... I finally got the side
next to the engine cut but reaching the other side was just a dream. I
finally got few scratches in it and got mad enough to put on a glove
and grab with pliers and rip it out section at a time. After I got the
fan out I was able to trim it to shape. The book also said that you
had to remove the squirrel cage to get it out as it would not clear.
They were wrong, it slipped out easily. Next I found that I had the
wrong new blower. It matched the book at National and Paul called
around town trying to find one close for me and the other parts places
all showed the same number but it was not the right one. The terminals
were wrong, the hole for the cooling hose was wrong and the cage was
not tall enough (Or wide enough depending on how you look at it). Paul
finally was able to find the right blower # (Proliance 5137) and of
course it was about $20 higher than the wrong one.
:-)
He found it at two warehouses, one in Cleveland and one somewhere in
Texas. He said it might take at least three days or more (they can
usually get me even oddball parts the same or next day). Since it is
going to drop down to about 4 degrees this week I didn't really want
to be without the van and I didn't want to use it without heat I
jury-rigged the wrong fan in today and will just eat the cost of the
wrong one. At about $25 it is a lot cheaper than renting a car.
:-)
It is working fine and I probably won't change it until after
Christmas or even new years. I'm switching it with a new headlight
switch I bought for the Fergie TO-20 and had not used yet.
I used the Fergie a few minutes today and even soaking wet it fired
right up. I moved the Super MTA and the Super M too. All kicked right
off in spite of a heavy rain last night and a heavy fog and high wet
winds this morning.
