Thanks for all the useful info so far, gentlemen!

In answer to the question about the necessity of changing, the time has
come.  The Lube in the A looks and smells like old mayo mixed with Coca
Cola.  The B probably isn't ready yet, but I need to pull the top cover off
to find out why it won't shift at the moment, and I want to be ready just in
case.
