The "thin shim" is called a "Speedi-Sleeve" and is sold by CR/SKF Seals and 
also as a "Redi-Sleeve" by National Seals which are now marketed by Timken. 
They are made from a drawn sleeve of stainless steel which has a ground and 
polished OD and they work great. These sleeves hold up much better than the 
cheapie harmonic balancer repair sleeves that are also out on the market for 
the more common car engines. The cheapie sleeves are just soft carbon steel 
with a plating to keep them from rusting. The true Speedi-Sleeves are also 
available in almost every standard shaft size (seal ID) from 3/4" to 7-1/2".
