Cecil,

I too recently used a seal shim and like you I can't think of its' common
name either.  I just took the worn shaft and old seal into the local bearing
house but all they needed was the seal part number.  With the seal part
number the counter guy looked up the corresponding seal shim number and then
after disappearing into the back for a couple of minutes came back with a
new seal and a seal shim which was/is a very thin ring of stainless steel.
We fit the shim on the shaft while it was laying on the counter and the guy
said the fit was tight enough that no glue/adhesive would be needed.  As you
say these shims are pricey - I think the seal was $19 but I definitely
remember the shim being more.  But, compared to the alternative, this was a
good deal.  Incidentally, to keep this tractor related, the shaft was out of
a Belt Pulley Gearbox on a Farmall W9.

There is also a thin shim that will fit over the worn part of the shaft
and "glue" to the shaft and the seal runs on the new shim.  I can't
think of hte name of this for anything.  IF you can find one that fits a
crankshaft it will be cheaper.  If you have to look it up at a bearing
house it will be about $30.  If it can fit a ford chev or dodge crank it
is probably $5
