Most folks would be ok without a filter I think as long as the ivy wasn't 
burning.  The smoke will get you bad.  Otherwise if you keep the juice off 
of you you're ok.
I don't get it very bad but do get a few bumps if I get too much of it on 
me.  A girl I grew up with inhaled some smoke from where her dad was burning 
off a ditch bank.  She was in the hospital and then in bed at home for the 
better part of a month.  She had never been alergic to it before.
