[AT] Tractor Question - 420 JD

Paul,

Roberts has the best reputation in the JD collecting community. There are
others who nationally advertise in JD magazines but do not have nearly as good a
reputation for handling troublesome carburetors. There are some passages that
cannot be opened just by boiling or by blowing with high pressure air. But the
key is, Roberts tests the carburetor on an actual engine for proper operation
before it is returned. Most if not all of the others do not have that
capability. It is known in the JD collecting community that Roberts should be
the first choice and is also well known for being the last choice because they
get fixed there. I have no connection to the company at all but have had one
very troubling duplex carburetor fixed there and have visited the facility
twice. A very professional operation and also a good place to get gaskets and
parts. Their gaskets are softer and thicker that others and work better on old,
warped, rusted and less than perfect surfaces. Much better than what JD or
aftermarket suppliers currently sell. Be prepared for a long wait if you send it
off to them for repair. They usually have a large backlog, especially in the
winter. But there really isn't any other place that will truly find the problem,
if it is the carburetor.

Thanks for the replies. It is good to know that at least it is the right
one. I have cleaned with carb cleaner and blown out several times over the
15 years I have owned it.. I took it to the place that Dennis Polk uses, and
had it boiled and new jets, still same thing. I had heard of the place in
IA and was thinking of trying them. About a vacuum leak, I did a ring job 2
years ago, and used all new gaskets, so it should not be leaking air. I did
use the same manifold, so if it is wrapped, then I would have the same
problem.

I will keep plugging away, thanks again
