John,
Here are my suggestions/comments:
Belize is a nice place: but it's definitely in the tropics. If you
plan to travel outside of the city, you need lots of shots.
Spain or Portugal is very nice. Not expensive. Great wines and food
in both places.
Ireland is beautiful. Many people there speak a language you won't
understand, but with patience you can get along with the oppressors
language pretty well.
Australia or New Zealand are also beatiful. Australia is unique in
that you really must treat every single wild animal and snake as deadly.
Hawaii has LOTS of non-city places to see. Even the remotest
wilderness you can imagine and all inbetween. The people are warm,
technically UhMerrican, and gracious. I predict that if you go to
Hawaii and get to know folks who've lived there a long time, you'll be
strongly tempted to retire there.
Nova Scotia is wonderful. Folks are very nice. You can actually drive
there, and I'd go back in an minute if the situation came that way.
If you keep driving/ferrying, you get to some of the most lovely
places on the coast of North America. The ferry from Maine is likely
booked, but give it a try.
Of course, there is always Canada, not far from you!
