Sandy soil is fun to work and easy to plow but it needs to be a bit damp but
not wet or dry. Wheel slip is certainly a big problem compared to heavy
land.
My grandfather had a similar life experience. I can't remember off hand
what year he was born or died but he was 95 and died sometime in the late
70's. That means he was born in the 1880's.
He logged and farmed all of his life after having to quit school at age 10
to work to help the family. He moved over the river in 1922 when my mother
was 4 and bought a 100+ acre tract of woodland that he and his two sons
cleared with cross cut saws and oxen. By the time I came along in the 1950
it was a very nice farm. He and the boys built every building on it and he
also built most of the wagons and such in his blacksmith shop. He did his
own harness work too. He farmed until he was in his mid 80's and had a
Super A, an H and a Super M when he stopped. Before he died the tenant
farmers were using big, modern equipment and his children and grandchildren
had traveled all over the world. He liked to travel too and would go
anywhere you wanted him to as long as he was home in time to feed up!
