I have a big advantage by loving all color old tractors and owning or
having owned most colors is that I get to both admire and criticize all of
them... :-) I don't have to feel a need to defend any of them in
particular like some of the "brand" guys. ;-) (You know, like those Green
and Yaller guys) ;-) I know that you don't consider AC to be super
superior, all including AC were all quite good or unique in some respect. If
they were not they just went away... It was a tough row just surviving. Many
good ones did not make it. Some just went away and others were swallowed.
My AC "C" is one of my favorites not only because it was bought new by
an old family friend but because even though it can be a bit hard to get off
and on it is quite comfortable to operate for long hours once your butt is
in the seat. I have never plowed with it and in recent years it has only
seen "show duty" but I used to use it for all of the sickle bar mowing work.
I have a mid mount sickle mower for it and it is so nice to not have to turn
around to see the bar cutting. We also used it for many many years to power
a PTO 48' double chain elevator and the grain augers. Of course it also saw
a good bit of work shuttling wagons etc.
I have kicked myself numerous times for selling my WD some years ago. It
needed much more than wax but was mechanically excellent as was the sheet
metal.
Son Scott still has his AC 190-XT and has about everything to get in
operation. Maybe if he gets his house done this fall and winter he will be
able to get back to it next spring. It is not running but it is at least
stored indoors.
My MM-R has had to sit out some this summer but at least it didn't get
rained on more than a few times. It will go back inside as soon as we get
done with it at the Conner Prairie living history museum event this next
weekend. The AC "C" will go there too along with the #$%& Farmall CUB.
I have two of those green and yaller ones... the 4020 has done any
plowing for some time except some tiny plots plowed with the Super MTA and
an old 2x14" rope trip IHC plow. The 1948 "A" has not done any real work
besides moving wagons etc and some firewood buzz sawing.
