It seems the size of the machine is not the criteria.  Just one little 
mistake can bring tragedy.
I would speculate the grass may have been wet at that time.

An Orleans County man riding his lawnmower died when his tractor went 
over an embankment along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
Sheriff's deputies said a 62-year-old man was riding his lawn tractor 
near the edge of his property on Banner Beach Road in Kendall.   (New York)
Police say he drove his mower over the embankment. He fell approximately 
15 feet.
A family member discovered him there. The man died on the scene.
His name is being withheld at the request of his family.
