Your mention about the pole being shortened for tractor use reminds me of a 
story my dad used to tell about some neighbors, and also about what can 
happen with joint ownership.  It seems these two neighbors owned a binder 
together. The first one was using it and turned too short breaking the 
pole. He grabbed a couple of 2 X 4's and nailed one on each side. Not too 
much later the second neighbor also broke the pole. He grabbed a couple of 
2 X 4's and nailed one on the top and one on the bottom. You can probably 
guess the rest. After about two years the pole was at least a foot thick, 
and still no one had fixed the pole.
