>From what I have seen in archive photos they are most likely gold to match  
the border of the decals. I have seen some close up photos where the trade name 
 decals and the pinstripes can both be seen, and they look the same. You can 
tell  they are both metallic by the way the camera flash is reflected. I don't 
agree  about them being black on the red tractors. In all the archive photos 
I have  seen, (even photos dated from late 1938) they are light colored.
