Larry,
Do you have the base mount Splitdorf 246C or 246T magneto, or a later flange 
mount Edison-Splitdorf CD spec 0010 on your D?  If you hook up a spark plug 
externally and ground the shell to the tractor frame, do you ever get any 
spark at all?  If I know what magneto you have we can do some resistance 
tests to determine if the coil is open.
