John,
All very good information. Duane's, Frank's, and yours. You are quite
right about getting the engines up to temperature and RPM with a load.
Everything works better and probably will last longer. I would like to
have a dynamometer so I could work my tractor's engines. Those old
tractors no longer have any field work to do.
But......my old Pratt & Whitney radial gets worked hard on the sprayer
and all of sudden the Champions spark plugs that I had always used,
REM40E, decided to no longer work properly. Several friends of mine in
the business had similar results. Something has gone haywire at
Champion. When this first happened to me, around 1998, I took the new
Champions out of the airplane and put the old ones back in as they did
run okay but were getting hard starting. I then called Omaha Airplane
Supply where I had purchased the plugs and told them of my problem. The
salesman said the iridium would solve any problems, just cost an
additional $700 and to send back the massive electrode plugs and they
would send them back to Champion for testing. If anything was found out
of sorts, I would get credit from Champion. I am still waiting to hear
from Champion.
