 Kreig,
I am not a big time user...but I regularly use a JD No. 8 mower behind a JD 530, JD 50, etc.
It has been very solid, the only issue we had was that I didn't check the bolts that hold the wooden pitman one season...the wood shrunk a bit and I broke the pitman.? Other than that, it has never let us down.? It has a breakaway feature if you hit something solid, or go faster than it mow.? It also has a slip clutch that prevented breakage when I hit a pipe one time.? My grandfather worked for Deere, (ca. development of the D to 1960), and he was the one that recommended the No. 8 many years ago.? We also have a No. 5, but haven't used it for years.

Good luck with your choice, I sometimes think I might like a mower that mounts under the belly of the tractor, but the No. 8 has been a great mower.?

Good luck with your choice,

John Maxwell
Ferndale, CA

Thinking of purchasing a sickle bar mower, and not really sure what to look
for. I would most likely use it on the JD530 or my much newer Ford 1710.
What should I look for in a used mower, what parts would be most worn and
any ideas about prices?

Thanks, Kreig
