[AT] OT NuGrape Soda--now other bottled drinks available?(Yes)

Charlie, I have heard of that game. They called it "Traveling" around
here.

Al

Al, going back to the days of local bottlers. All of the bottles had
the
name of the town on the bottom. Do you remember the men playing "poker"
with the bottles. They'd all put up a dollar or a quarter or
something,
select a coke or pepsi from the box and look to see who's bottle came
from
the greatest away.

They called it "pulling". You'd walk in the store and someone would say
"I'll pull ya for a dollar".

Al, I can't remember where Lovick's Cafe was. I remember the name.

My dad had a service station and a farm. In tobacco season a lot of
drink
bottles made their way to the house and a lot of them never made it back
to
the store. Out behind mom's house by the edge of the woods there is a
pile
of drink bottles that I'm sure numbers in the hundreds. They've been
there
since the 60's and are now covered with leaves, roots, etc. One of
these
days I need to dig them up and see what sort of treasures are in the
pile.

Thanks to Gerald! I found the Dr. Pepper Co. online at West
Jefferson.....gonna have to order some for my birthday.....

I just remembered something else about drinks. I have heard my daddy say
growing up in the 40's and 50's that people in our area (near
Jacksonville, NC) had their preference of Coke (or Ko-Koler as most
people say it around here) based on where it was bottled--some liked it
bottled in Wilmington, others preferred Coke bottled in New Bern.

Charlie, the last real Pepsi I drank in a returnable bottle was at
Lovick's Café in Kinston. The year was 1996. I mean it was the real
thing, not the new longnecks.

Here is the actual message that Gerald tried to send to the list.

Charlie

Al, the glass bottles are still available. Last year I built and
opened a
small "general store" on our farm and try to
stock many of the items I remember from my grandfather's store when I
was a
kid. You can get the "long neck" glass
bottle drinks from most distributors but they are much more expensive
than
they once were. Dr. Pepper Bottling Company in
West Jefferson, NC sells Mtn. Dew, Cheerwine, Grape and Orange Nehi,
etc. in
the long neck glass bottles with the pop off
metal cap. I think they sell wholesale for somewhere around $14 for a
case
of 24.

Some Wal-Mart SuperCenters that sell food also sell glass bottle Orange
Crush, Grape Crush and Cheerwine for $2.50 per six pack.
Nothing tastes quite like a cold Orange Crush with a pack of peanuts
poured
in it....at least to me. I try to have at least one a day. 8-)
We probably sell more Orange Crush and IBC root beer in glass bottles
than
all other drinks combined.

Yes it's hot here! CJ has made me run the AC for 2 days now. LOL.
Actually she does suffer in the heat so if she gets to panting too
hard I'll turn it on even if Lynn and I are still bearing the heat ok.

I thought it might rain here last night but it didn't. We had a
little "cold" front form and the breeze has shifted to the N/E this
morning. It's cooler here so far today but it won't hold long.

If your message doesn't make it to the list I'll forward it for you.
I'm glad to here the NuGrape, NeHi and Crush stuff is still around. All
you can find here anymore is the products Coke and Pepsi distribute .

Is it warm down east? It is pretty warm here....downright hot
during the day. We are so dry that nothing is growing. Suppose to rain
Friday.

I have been keeping up with the thread on NuGrape and tried to
respond to Al's post but for some reason my posts never seem to show up
on the list. The glass bottle Mtn. Dew, Nehi Grape and Orange, as well
as several other brands are still available from Dr. Pepper Bottling
Co., in West Jefferson and I imagine several other suppliers. The
problem is that they sell for $14+ for a case of 24! You can still get
the Orange Crush and Grape Crush as well as Cheerwine in bottles at
Wal-Mart....at least the one here. That is where we get them for the
store. They sell for $ 2.50 per six pack. We sell more Orange Crush
and IBC rootbeer than anything else....except for bottled water. I try
to have a least one Orange Crush a day with a pack of peanuts poured in
for flavor. Maybe my post will make it in eventually.

    Gerald
