[Farmall] U-1 Cub Power Unit Serial Number

Guy, I had wondered about >exactly< what IH called it!  I have a 52R
parts book, which lists all the stuff you need to put on the combine to
actually mount the engine, but there's a footnote on the page that says:

"Service parts information for the U-1 Cub Basic Engine, adaptable for
use with the No. 52-R Harvester-Thresher though not shown in this
catalog, will be published later and circulated to the District Offices
and Dealers."

I felt like, though, that it was a little different animal than just a
standard power unit, since the governor controls are a little different
for the combine.  Fortunately I got a genuine parts book and owners
manual for the engine on Ebay.

I guess I would be branded a heretic in the wrong crowd, but based on my
experiences with the Continental Y-69 on my other combine, I don't know
why IH didn't use that engine in the Cub tractor, instead of developing
the C-60. (Ducking quickly)

ANYWAY.  Looks like I have an "early" combine engine!

Yes, they started at 501. If it came off a 52R combine, it't won't be a
power unit, it will be a combine engine (two different things in
IH-land).

I have a U-1 power unit, same engine as a Cub Farmall, on a 52R combine.
The power unit serial number is 580.  (I didn't write down the engine
serial number but it's a '49 by casting codes.)  Did IH begin numbering
their power unit models at 501, like they did most of their tractors?
