Howard---There are a number of putty type products that can be used to seal
exhaust systems. Your local NAPA store should have what you need. Do a
Google search for "muffler sealant" and you should quite a few products
suitable for what you need.  
 
JB weld would turn loose from the heat. Hear is one brand http://tinyurl
com/2etrbt .  
 
Locktite makes one in the putty type.
