[AT] Heider Tractor

Heider, now theres a familiar name. It was the first tractor on my
grandfather's farm. Bought some time in the early twenties. The name on the
I.D. plate (which I still have) calls it the Rock Island Heider. I still
have the operators manual plus a few miscellaneous parts that survived after
it was wrecked for scrap in the late fourties. Unfortunately there is only
one photo of it that I know of and even that is not real clear. It was a
bigger tractor than the one in Rick's album. Had the canopy and fenders. I
remember Dad talking about having to buy a new cone for the friction drive
when they tried to put it back in service after WWII. Outdoor storage may
have shortened the life of the leather cone . Surprisingly they were able to
buy a new one, I think it was through the Cockshutt dealer but I could be
wrong. The new cone was not enough to keep that tractor working though. It
threw a rod through the block soon after and was permantly retired.
