LOL! Sorry about that Mark.
I use the array of items that are coming out of pawn as a gauge on the
economy. When you start seeing a large number of tools in the "front" room
that are essential for making a living in a trade, you know the economy is
in the dumpster. What's scary is when you see items coming out of pawn
(particularly electronics) that are priced above current retail for the same
items. That means things are so bad that the pawn broker got caught off
guard and gave the item more value as collateral than its replacement price.
Of course, if the pawn shop is within easy commuting distance of a casino or
race track, then the contents of the shop have nothing to do with the
economy -- it just reflects people's addiction to gambling. But those
locations can be a real goldmine. Apparently it's not unusual for people to
hock some really good items just so they can get back home after a bad day
at the slots. I've even done Christmas shopping in pawn shops. Maybe that
just shows how weird I am. :-)
