Larry, there is not one answer to your question. We've had similiar plans
but noone builds like that today :-( our house is originally built before
the 1840's since we have one big chimney (without ladder and such) but there
are two stone walls and a bottom that is 1,5 X 2 metres. In the older days
the fireplace was att the floor at the base but in the 1840's the
kerosenelamp became common. Before this the only cheap source of light was
the open fire so most people gatherred in this one room often the only
heated room at small farms were this room/the kitchen so everybody slept
there too. But in the 19th century most things changed since you had
kerosene light there was no need for an open fire so people got
woodenstoves. In this picture
http://public.fotki.com/Duplobarbaren/home/kk.html is a part of our
kitchen. The bottom original wall of the chimney begins left of the cupboard
and goes all the way behind the stoves. this kitchen was probably all that
was a long time ago. maybe a part of the room behind it existed but was not
heated during winter. http://public.fotki.com/Duplobarbaren/home/sal.html The
same wall from the other side. If you look at the outdoor pictures it's the
chimney left of the entrance but it is now higher than it originally was.
