If you forget to turn off the main before you connect your generator, the 
generator will send power out on the power company's lines and could kill some 
lineman who thinks the power is off because he pulled the jacks a mile or two up 
the line. It is not legal to do this unless you have a transfer switch wired 
in to disconnect the power company before your generator  is connected.
