I had a similar experience that ended up being a bad element in a very old how water heater.  
 
On the other hand, I was reading some cause of death records from my area from the 1800's, we really are lucky today.  Many young women died from "child-bed fever".  Some of the other causes were blood poisoning, killed by animals (usually horses), "accidental shot while stealing a horse", and various diseases that are vaccines today.
