Don't know if you need another winter project, but sometimes the bare deck 
shell from the dealer is quite reasonable.  Remove all the parts from your 
existing deck and maybe replace the spindle bearings at the same time and 
you end up with a like new mower.  I paid about $200 for a 48" simplicity 
deck shell about 5 years ago.  JD prices might be different.
