Sorry I'm a little late answering this.
To check the mag, take a spark plug and hook one of the plug wires to it.  
Lay the plug against the block where it will get a good ground. Crank the engine 
 till that plug fires. You should get a good blue spark. If you don't get 
any,  the coil, magnet or condenser may be weak. That is provided the impulse is  
working ok (which you have probably checked out by now). Let us know how you  
made out with it.
