More important than the pad is what you do to the surface of the  drum.  
Spray brake cleaner is probably sufficient as a band cleaner, but  the metal drums 
should be burnished with sandpaper to remove any  glaze.  As far as extreme 
cleanliness, modern disc brake systems on  vehicles are totally exposed to all 
kind of road chemicals as soon as they drive  out the door.  The main thing is 
to use the brake cleaner on new rotors to  remove the protectorant put on 
them to keep them from rusting before you  put them on.  If you use the old 
rotors, they too should be burnished with  sandpaper to remove the glaze for proper 
seating with the new pads.
