[AT] Troubleshooting no start

Dean, have you just swapped the battery out and now it won't start? Could be the coil is weak and would only put out enough spark with higher voltage... I wonder if the previous owner somehow upgraded the coil to work on a higher voltage, perhaps they put in a 12 volt coil that the 8 volt system could support..?

I usually put a plug grounded to the side of the engine and put the plug wire on it, I then turn the engine over to see if I have spark... 

Also, another thought, do you have water in your gas? If so, it will have worked it's way into the carb and you probably won't be able to get it started... I run into this a lot with my tractors that I don't start often. 

But, I would start by checking for spark....
