NY's sales tax on a gallon of gasoline is 31.9 cents (cpg) but that doesn't include the 7.9 cpg average county tax and the 18.4 cpg federal tax. So figure 58.2 cpg goes to local, state and federal govts for every gallon bought. Diesel's about 3 cpg less. And people wonder why govt drags its feet on trying to control soaring gas/oil/diesel prices.
