The switch on a mag equipped tractor is not connected to the charging 
circuit in any way. So there should be no problem using an alternator, 
as long as the charging circuit doesn't connect to the kill switch. Just 
hook up the alternator with the lead from the "BAT" terminal to one side 
of the ammeter. Then connect the other side of the ammeter to any point 
on the tractors wiring (probably the light switch) that goes to the 
battery "hot" terminal (usually the positive side in an alternator system).

When I converted my tractors with Delco-Remy generators to GM 
alternators, I just used the generator's pulley, and it worked just 
fine. But most auto parts stores have a box of spare pulleys in the 
back, and you can usually find one that is small enough and fits your 
alternator. Either that, or a visit to your favorite auto salvage yard 
would be in order.

What I do is start the tractors and let them warm up a bit, even if the 
alternator isn't charging. Then after I have good oil pressure and a 
little heat, I speed up the engine, and the alternators usually kick in 
after 5-10 seconds. It doesn't hurt anything to run the tractor for a 
while with the alternator not charging, so you don't have to rev the 
engine when it is cold. This is even more true of a mag tractor, since 
it doesn't take anything from the battery when it is running.
