I don't know how to define "amateur" , but a cousin I sometimes work for 
gave all his farm trucks 50 foot paint jobs (looks good from 50 feet).  One 
truck I remember had a blue hood, green fender, and gray doors. The box was 
natural rust. He has 4 trucks. Every time we took a truck on the road the 
DOT stopped us. We repaired some of the rusted spots with bondo and 
fiberglass and smoothed them with a 4 1/2 inch grinder and metal grinding 
wheel.  We then gave them a 50 ft. paint job using gloss white on the cabs 
and gloss black for the boxes. Haven't been stopped in over 5 years.
