Charlie, thanks for the reply.    As I said, you didn't see much harvesting 
in downtown Baltimore. Looting yes, harvesting  no :)

That must have been back-breaking work.

Hi Dick,

The way I harvested it was by walking, bent over between two rows, pulling
the leaves off one row with each hand and holding them under my arms or
between my legs until I couldn't hold any more.  Then take them over and put
them in the "truck".  The harvesters are really a mid '50's invention and
most farmers didn't use mechanical devices until the 70's and 80's.  In fact
there are still farmers that harvest by hand and on foot.  The reason most
don't is because of a lack of labor that will work that hard.  The
mechanical harvestors are fast and efficient but they damage the leaves and
the quality of the cured tobacco some.
