Thanks, Mike and Farmer.  I'll definitely press on with something ordinary,
and have added Wally World to my list of stops for this morning.

Other projects for today are to put on the belt pulley and fenders I bought
at a salvage yard (they're regular old H and M fenders, but I took them off
a 560).   I need to do something with the battery, since it doesn't have a
battery box and is currently held in place by a bungee cord that hooks into
the little bracket where the belt pulley control rod is supposed to go.  I
haven't looked in the air cleaner but I expect I owe it an hour with rags.
I bet if I look I can find a few other such places too.
