Cecil -

There are several alternate routes you could take that would be scenic and 
involve the Adirondacks BUT it would add an hour or more to reaching the 
Falls.

You might consider getting off I-87 onto NYS Rte 8, just south of 
Ticonderoga, and follow it to Utica where you could get onto I-90 for the 
rest of the way. That would be a good compromise, giving you some enjoyable 
scenic driving w/o adding extra time, rather than spending the whole time 
pounding the interstates.
