Say you have a two bottom plow. Mark a line from the rearward bottom's point 
straight forward  past the forward bottom, making essentially a parallel 
line between the two bottoms. The distance from the point of the forward 
plow point to the line coming from the rearward plow point is your 
measurment. 12, 14, 16,etc. On a lot of plows, you can measure the distance 
between beams, but not all, as some have offset shanks. Clear as mud now?
