Dean,

You need a lot of heat to solder a cable that big.  I clamp the terminal tab 
in a vise, then fill the socket with flux and dunk the cable end in flux as 
well.  Heat the socket until the flux boils and then melt solder into the 
socket until it's about full.  Push the cable into the melted solder and 
keep the heat on until the cable goes in all the way then let it cool.
