[AT] plowing

	Hi Jim:

Moving the wheel out will not make that furrow any wider. It is normal for
a 15.5 to rub the furrow wall and also mash down a narrow amount of the
plowed soil with a 14' moldboard. That is why later plows moved to 16" and
18" bases. An 18.4 tire really eats up a 14" furrow. ;-) If it is making
the finished result ridged to much you can compensate by making the front
base move a little more dirt. Moving that wheel out a bit can do that but
you have to take the "line of draft" into consideration. Almost all mounted
plows have a provision for "steering" the plow. On most John Deere mounted
plows there is a hand lever on the 3 point cross shaft. Running the front a
little deeper (shorten top link slightly or lower that side of the plow with
the leveling crank on the tractor) can also sometimes eliminate that ridge.
The main consideration is as I mentioned the "line of draft". With out
getting too involved here the load (draft) needs to be centered behind the
tractor properly but you can't do that just by measuring and centering the
plow. One of the simplest ways is to plow and observe the front tire contact
with the ground. If the line of draft is correct the tractor will almost
stay in a straight line without front wheels. This is easier to observe on
bare ground but you can do it in sod if you watch closely. If the tire shows
that you have to hold the tractor in line by steering toward one side or the
other all of the time then tweaking the adjustments can improve performance.
Any adjustment generally affects all of the others so you may have to tweak
more than one and more than once.

Stuff like this can be a little hard to describe... I always just did it...

I just purchest a 630 JD with a 3 bottom 14" JD mounted 3pt. plow. The
tractor has 15.5 -38 tires. The inside of the furrow wheel is in line with
the back edge of the first share. Can this wheel be moved out a couple more
inches. The furrow wheel is wider than the furrow. thank you Jim Hilgartner
