If they are ground hornets. then ordinary gasoline works better than anything 
else I have used, except I don't light it, I just throw/pour it in/around 
their entrance hole.
Since gas fumes are heavier than air, they displace the oxygen and smother 
the bas***ds.
Those that are out of the nest return, and many fly in too quickly and don't 
make it back out.
The few that remain are usually gone by the next day.
If you can wait till dark, they are all inside then and you will get them all 
that way.
