You shouldnt use sugar in your coffee :-)
Is it a turning knob or does it slide sideways or is it a pushbutton?
try some electronic cleaner or plain air and/or some jiggling.
If this doesn't work you can take it to a shop or run it over with an old
tractor (obligatory tractor reference)
