Lead-acid batteries produce approximately 2.2 volts per cell.  A 6 volt battery will have 3 cells, an 8 volt - 4 cells and a 12 volt - 6 cells.  Just count the caps or cell openings under the vent covers.

  Other than lifting them in and out of old tractors, I don't have much to do 
  with batteries.  They never seem to have any wording on the label to 
  identify the voltage.  What is an easy way to identify 6, 8 and 12 volt 
  batteries?
